Analysis of the installed capacity of the Internet of Vehicles: Related functions are about to become standard

With the continuous advancement of intelligent and networked technologies, the Internet of Vehicles has become a key direction for the transformation and upgrading of the automotive industry. Through 5G, V2X and other communication technologies, the Internet of Vehicles realizes real-time interconnection between vehicles and vehicles, roads, pedestrians and clouds, and the application scenarios gradually expand from assisted driving and safety early warning to intelligent traffic scheduling, personalized services and energy collaboration, becoming an important infrastructure for smart transportation and smart cities. With the help of policy promotion and industrial synergy, the popularization of the Internet of Vehicles has accelerated, and the installed capacity has continued to grow, which has become an important indicator to measure technology penetration and market activity.

according toGascarIntelligent cockpit configuration databaseFrom January to April 2025, the installation rate of 4G/5G mobile communication networks in domestic passenger cars reached 83.0%, of which the 5G installation rate was 19.5%, which continued to increase steadily from 6.3% in 2023 and 12.8% in 2024, continuing the good growth trend in the past two years. With the increasing maturity of 5G modules in terms of cost, network coverage and standard system, 5G is accelerating its penetration into more models, providing more powerful and stable communication support for intelligent networked vehicles, and promoting the continuous acceleration of vehicle intelligence.

The domestic 5G T-Box installation volume reached 651,000 sets, with a penetration rate of 9.8%, a year-on-year increase of 90.4%. Although there is still a gap compared to the 3.245 million units of 4G T-Boxes in the same period, 5G T-Boxes have grown rapidly, reaching only 342,000 units in the same period in 2024, nearly doubling growth. With its advantages such as high speed and low latency, 5G T-Box is gradually replacing 4G products and is expected to become the mainstream of in-vehicle communication in the future.

From January to April 2025, domestic passenger carsOTAThe penetration rate climbed to 77%, and the installed volume jumped to 5.074 million units from 4.492 million units in the same period in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 13%.OTA, or “over-the-air” technology, allows vehicles to perform software updates over wireless networks, fixing vulnerabilities, optimizing performance, and adding new features. This rapid increase in feature penetration shows that car companies are paying more and more attention to the software iteration capabilities of vehicles and are committed to providing users with a continuously evolving driving experience.

During the same period, the penetration rate of in-vehicle WiFi reached 69%, a significant increase from 61% in the same period in 2024, and the installed volume increased from 3.802 million units to 4.56 million units, a year-on-year increase of 20%. In-car WiFi provides stable and convenient network connection for passengers in the car, meeting diverse needs such as entertainment and office. The continuous improvement of vehicle WiFi penetration is driving its transformation from optional functions to core configurations, and gradually integrating into the digital architecture of the whole vehicle.

The installation rate of mobile app remote control function has reached 88%, and the installed volume has increased from 4.972 million units to 5.829 million units, an increase of 17% year-on-year. This function supports remote unlocking, starting the vehicle, adjusting the air conditioning and other operations, which greatly improves the convenience and safety of using the car. For example, car owners can turn on the air conditioner in advance in the scorching heat, or remotely confirm when they are not sure whether to lock the car, and its high penetration rate shows that consumers widely recognize the smart and convenient experience.

From January to April 2025, the penetration rate of digital keys for domestic passenger cars increased significantly to 52.3%, an increase of 12.6 percentage points from 39.7% in the same period in 2024。 Consumers’ expectations for convenient and intelligent car experience continue to increase, and digital keys are being adopted by more models with their ease of operation and sense of technology, and are accelerating towards mainstream configuration.

From the perspective of different technology types, there are obvious differences in the installation of digital keys. From January to April 2025, the number of Bluetooth keys will reach 3.343 million sets, with a penetration rate of 50.4%, which is still the most widely used technology type, mainly due to its technological maturity and cost advantages. The number of NFC/RFID keys is 1.909 million, with a penetration rate of 28.8%, which also occupies a certain share of the market. In contrast, UWB digital keys are only equipped with 400,000 sets and a penetration rate of 6.0%, but with their higher security and precise positioning capabilities, they have significant growth potential and are expected to accelerate their adoption in the future.

From the perspective of price range distribution, the downward trend of UWB digital key models is obvious. Its proportion in 10-200,000 yuan models increased from 1% in the same period last year to 4%, while the range of 20-300,000 yuan and 30-400,000 yuan fell from 36% and 26% to 33% and 23% respectively. 40-500,000 yuan and more than 500,000 yuan have risen from 19% and 18% to 20% respectively, and the application of UWB in high-end models is still stable, even slightly enhanced.
