Since the launch of Xiaomi YU7, it has attracted a lot of attention with its unique design language, and about the shape of Xiaomi YU7, Xiaomi Auto has recently made a very comprehensive design manual. The design process of this electric SUV shows the Xiaomi team’s deep thinking about “shape” and “meaning”, as well as the exploration of finding a balance between tradition and innovation.

The design team drew inspiration from classic sports car proportions, paying special attention to the key parameter L113 (the distance from the center of the front wheels to the brake pedal). In the era of electric vehicles, this traditional ratio has been given a new meaning. The extended front overhang not only creates a more dynamic visual effect, but also optimizes the weight distribution and aerodynamics of the vehicle. Through the cooperation of clam covers, three-dimensional headlights and other elements, this design forms a complete functional aesthetic closed loop.
The side shape of the YU7 shows the ingenuity of the design team. The combination of a fastback roof and a raised waistline creates a strong sporty feel, while the use of frameless doors and hidden door handles makes the body lines purer. It is worth noting that these designs faced numerous engineering challenges during implementation, particularly the stamping process for the A-pillar and front cover. After trial and error, the team finally found the best solution that balances aesthetics and safety.
The lighting design became a highlight of the YU7. The hollow water drop headlights not only continue the family characteristics, but also innovatively integrate the air duct function into it, realizing the unity of shape and function. The taillight design has been adjusted according to the characteristics of SUV models, replacing the coupe-style star ring design with a simple and told corner shape, showing an accurate grasp of the positioning of different models.
The design of YU7 shows the growth and thinking of the Xiaomi Auto team. While inheriting the classic car aesthetics, the team is also working hard to explore its own design language. Although some elements can still be borrowed, the innovation in detail processing and functional integration shows that Xiaomi is gradually building its own design system. For this young car brand, how to find a balance between learning and innovation is still a topic that its design team needs to continue to explore.
