Sensata Technology has announced the launch of the SIM200 Insulation Monitoring Device (IMD), which aims to elevate the next generationElectric vehicleEcosystem security. Developed for continuous monitoring of non-grounded DC systems, it is suitable for charging stations, electric vehicles and other systems operating at voltages above 60VDC.
In high-voltage systems, electrical isolation is achieved through non-conductive barriers such as cable insulation, component plastic housings, and physical spacing. The role of insulation monitoring devices (IMDs) is to continuously monitor these systems for failures – such failures can lead to abnormal current leakage, which can pose a risk of electric shock.
The SIM200 insulation monitor provides “always-on” continuous monitoring using patented signal injection algorithms and calculations – even when the system is turned off or experiences large voltage fluctuations, the SIM200 insulation monitor monitors the total stored capacitance of the system. This feature is critical for the safety of future high-power megawatt charging applications and meets future insulation monitoring specifications.
Using technology from Sendyne (acquired by Sensata in 2021), the SIM200 insulation monitoring device monitors the insulation of the isolation ground system by injecting a small voltage into the high-voltage positive and negative busbars through isolation resistors. The system injects pulse signals alternately between positive and negative busbars at a set time period and monitors these pulses by comparing them to the system voltage to identify safety hazards and trigger system shutdown if necessary.
The SIM200 can be seamlessly integrated into EV charging and other platforms, offering standard module configurations for the voltage range of 60V to 1500V. The device is UL 2231-2 certified and has been tested to IEC 61557-8 requirements. Its communication framework incorporates input recommendations from many of the world’s top OEMs, with dual dedicated fault state output interfaces, powerful self-diagnostics, and a modular CAN 2.0B interface for detailed system information transmission.
“With its total capacitance measurement and continuous monitoring capabilities, the SIM200 is a powerful insulation monitoring solution for the next generation of high-voltage systems,” said Alice Martins, vice president and general manager of Sensata’s Industrial Solutions business unit. This is a product that drives our mission to support OEMs around the world in creating a cleaner, more secure oneelectrificationworld. ”
