The concept of batteries using a water-based electrolyte solution instead of the organic solvent used in lithium batteries has been around since the 19th century. The lead-acid “water-based” battery used to start most internal combustion engine vehicles was invented in 1859 and is still in use today. However, the energy density, voltage, and storage capacity of water-based batteries are not enough to driveElectric vehicle, and cannot adequately store energy generated by renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines.
